South America South America is composed of several tropical climates and terrains, but there are however some cold climates in Southern Argentina. South America's largest tropical rainforest is the Amazon, here you can find Golden Lion Tamarins, Amazon Horned Frogs, Capuchin Monkeys, Emerald Tree Boas, and many, many more!

Poison Dart Frog
This is a Poison dart frog. They come in all different colors, like yellow,
blue, red, orange, purple, and green. Although these colors make them
look very silly they also prevent the frogs from being eaten! Because when
an animal sees these bright colors it knows thatthose colors mean " I'm
venomous, so don't eat or i won't be the only one dying... "

Golden Lion Tamarin
You can sort of see where these animals get their names! I mean
they are golden, and they have a mane around their head! These
'little lions' live in the amazon rain forest in Brazil, they're about
the size of squirrels, and some people even call them the squirrels
of the rain forest!

Electric Eel
Electric Eels can get up to eight ft. long, and weigh about 44 lb! An
Electric Eels shock could knock a horse off it's feet! It's hard to think
that a slippery Electric Eel could such a crazy things! But don't fret,
unlessyou get shocked multiple times by them they can't really kill
humans. The most the could do is stun you for a few seconds.

Amazon Horned Frog
These funny looking frogs can be found in fresh water marshes in the
amazon rain forest. They are about the size of tea cups and could sit on
a tea saucer without any limb hanging over the edge of the saucer. they
use their size as an advantage for hunting their prey. To hunt they
shove themselves in between all the shrubbery so only their heads are
sticking out, so when they see something smaller then themselves they
jump out and gulp it down.

Galapagos Tortoise
These Tortoises can live to very, very old, in fact some scientists believe
that there is a tortoise that was hatching in the 1800's, when Charles Darwin
went to the Galapagos, and is still alive today! But the oldest one on record is
only 153, now you may be saying, "Only!" well compared to one that hatched
in the 1800's that's actually very young! These tortoises are the longest living
vertebrates in the world, and the world largest Tortoise reaching five ft. in length!
Many animals of the Galapagos are endangered and the Ecuadorian government
is protecting these animals very well. They have made a law that you can't
approach or touch the animals, but they can approach or touch you!

Hoatzin
These birds breed in the rainy season, funny because since they live in a RAINforest you'd think
the rainy season is year round! But other then breeding amongst themselves, they don't socialize
with other birds nearly as much as they do with cows and sheep! because these birds have
a different fermentation process then other birds, but they have the same fermentation process as
cows and sheep! The Hoatzin Guaviare's socializing habits aren't the only strange thing about this
bird, it also has wing claws, so it can climb to the top of trees and fly the the top of them.

Sword Billed Humming Bird
You can see where this bird gets it's name! But unlike a sword us humans might use, this
birds "sword" is 4 in. long making it longer than the birds body! Because of it's long bill this
bird can't preen it's feathers with it's bill, so instead they use their feet to preen their
feathers.

Capybara
Capybaras live in groups to stay protected from predators. Capybaras are the main
prey for many of the Amazons most dangerous animals, and they live right in the center
of the Amazon! To protect themselves the have one alpha male who is in the center of
the clump, and gets access to resources first, and is the first to know if they're is predators
around. Capybaras are great swimmers, and they are great swimmers, which the use to
they're advantage to escape predators!

Collared Peccary
Peccaries are highly social and live in groups of six to ten, no matter where they are.
Peccaries live in places that are more desert-like to places with more trees, and plants
to places that are more of a Rainforest climate. These animals have somewhat large
heads compared to their skinny legs. They eat mostly plants, and fruit along with a
few insects.

Horned Screamer
If you don't really think about it you may not realize it's resemblance to a Chicken, but it has
a short beak and two bony feet. Other then it's weird resemblance to a Chicken this bird really
lives up to it's name, and not just because of the thin horn-like feather on it's head, but also
because of the loud obnoxious sound it makes! The Horned screamer make a sound that
is sort of like a "U-Who" kind of sound, sort of like an owl sound.

Giant Anteater
anteaters as you may guess, eat ants! The have a very long tongue that goes all the way down
they're snout, and then out even further to suck up rows, and rows of ants at a time. however
not much else is known about these great animals because people haven't bothered to
study them as much! We do know that giant ant eaters have their own territories, and will defend
these. The only exception to having more then one anteater per territory is when they mate, and
when mothers care for their young for about a year. after mating season, and after young are old
enough to go out on their own, these creatures are strictly solitary.

Orange Collared Manakin
These little birds can be found in Colombia, and in some parts of central america.
They have been having a population decline, but not enough to be considered
vulnerable. These birds eat fruit, and bugs they find in the trees. Once they mate
the female will usually lay two eggs. For a male to get a females attention they
make a big energetic spectacle for the female to see, and appreciate. The females
will care for the babies while they are eggs, and also when they are born.

Maned Wolf
This wolf is often mistaken for a long legged fox, but you can tell the difference because
of the black patch on it's neck, and it's long legs. It stands at 3 ft. tall (to the shoulder)
and weighs about 50 or so pounds. Maned wolves can rotate their seven inch long ears
to listen for prey in the grass, you may notice this in the picture. They will eat both meat
and plants making them omnivores. The eat things like small mammals, insects, reptiles,
birds, and bird eggs, as for the vegetarian part of them they also eat fruits, and vegetation.

Eyelash Viper
If you are like me, you must be wondering why this viper isn't called the banana viper! Well
the people who named it the eyelash viper had some sense...See those pointy things
sticking out of it's eyes? Those are the "eyelashes". These vipers have really long fangs,
and they strike with their whole body weight, so if you're going on a vacation to south america
with your pet mouse, stay away from these...

Emerald Tree Boa
Emerald is green, this snake is green...see the connection! This snake isn't as green as the eyelash
viper is yellow, but it definitely is up there. This snake has yellow and white spots all around its body.
These snakes rarely leave their homes in the green leaves where they can camouflage well. They come
out only to eat birds and small mammals. Which is pretty easy since there are a lot of leaves, and foliage
where these snakes live, the Amazon Rainforest!

Kinkajou
Kinkajous are probably the cutest little carnivorous mammals I personally have ever seen. They
are also pretty incredible, Kinkajous normally 20-30 years (which is pretty long for an animal
this size) but the one in the Honolulu zoo so far has lived over 40 years in captivity! Another cool
thing they do is rarely touch the ground. They live on the canopies of trees, you can get water from
trees, and you can get food from trees, even living food, like bugs, birds, and more. They can
turn their feet backwards, which you can sort of see in the picture, to run back and forth or side to
side easily. They also have seven inch long tongues which they use to eat the nectar out of the
center of tropical flowers. Their tongue abilities also helps pollinate flowers when they transfer a
little leftover nectar from another flower to the new flower they are eating from.

Capuchin Monkey
Capuchin monkeys have many monkey-like characteristics. They are about 3-9 lbs and have
tanish whitish fur. Their babies have partially bald stomachs making them a whole lot cuter! The
Capuchin monkey inhabits most of Brazil and some other parts of latin america, however their
exact range is unknown. Although jaguars and people hunt them, they have a pretty high
reproductive rate which keeps them alive.

Olinguito
The Olinguito is a recently discovered species as of August 2013 in Colombia and Ecuador. Since it is a mammal
you would think we found this species a while ago, and the truth is we did! However for hundreds of years people
have seen them, photographed them, etc. but, the whole time people have been confusing them with other species!
It is the smallest member of the racoon family, and by far the cutest! Being so small, the Olinguito is very vulnerable
to predators, so the Olinguito is nocturnal, and only stays on trees. Since this species was recently discovered we,
unfortunatly, do not know much about it.

Paca
Pacas can be found in northern South America in countries like Suriname all the way down Paraguay.
They are nocturnal, so during the day they are either digging burrows near river banks in forests, or
sleeping in their burrows! At night when they are up and about they like to stay near the rivers to be able
to escape predators easily by swimming away, which is why it comes in handy that they are such great
swimmers.

Turquoise-Browed Motmot
The Turquoise-Browed Motmot, also known as the Torogoz, can be found in Central America. This bird enjoys
living in tropical rainforest climates. One of the more distinct features of this bird would be its long tail feathers,
two slim feathers with a racket-tip. A unique characteristic this bird has is where it chooses to nest, unlike most
birds, the torogoz nests in burrows that are 0.6 to 2.5 m. long that are 8 cm wide. The torogoz is the national
bird of El Salvador. These birds eat different types of insects and some small lizards too.
